who publicly and proudly documented their grow-out, and celebrated their silver hair.

These factors amplified and accelerated a trend that Ilise believes will lead to the normalization of gray hair for women and girls of any age. In the award winning Your Roots Are Showing, she shows us how we got here, and why it matters.

As a celebrity makeup/hair artist with decades of experience, Harris recognized this greyvolution as a defining moment in fashion and beauty history. She began by interviewing people with her iPhone and collected self-recorded “hairstories” from women around the world. The goal was to tell the story of the collective, through the voices of individuals.

The film opens the door to questions around the “why’s” of how we show up in the world physically, and for whom.

We learn about the history of hair dye from antiquity to the present day, with its cultural significance as well as modern health risks. A rousing dance tune called Freedom for the intro is the backdrop for a stunning montage of silver transformations. beauty insiders who put this cultural shift into a broader perspective.
